The MPIs outline what an English learner at a specific level of English language proficiency can do in a language domain (e.g., listening) by addressing the language functions embedded in an example topic for that content area with appropriate scaffolds or support (Gottlieb, Cranley, & Cammileri, 2007).
The truth is that levels A1 and A2 are completely distinct phases in your language learning journey. You can do things at level A1 that you could only dream about on Day 1. And when you’ve hit level A2, you’ve already covered serious ground, and can even begin to have conversations! Each of these levels is a big milestone.
These languages usually have significant linguistic and/or cultural differences from English. Learning results for Category 2 and Category 3 languages have consistently shown that English learners require more time to learn these languages than Category 1 languages.
